News to top


The biggest recent news is of course that the Center for Cosmological Physics ceased to exist on March 10th and was transformed to the Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics following a generous endowment of 7.5 Million dollars from Fred Kavli and the Kavli Foundation.

A bigger inaugural event is planned for April 30th when Fred Kavli and his colleagues will visit KICP. There will be an opportunity at that time for all KICP members and associates to hear from Mr. Kavli himself about his visions for the Institute.

Note that the domain name for our website is now kicp.uchicago.edu and all email addresses that were formerly xxx@cfcp.uchicago.edu will work if kicp.uchicago.edu is used instead. Please use the new name in your affiliation if you have used cfcp in the past.

Rick Kessler has put together a new set of pages that describe KICPs contribution to the Supernova Factory project. These very nice set of pages include introductory material on what Dark Energy is, its effects, how it can be detected and how the goals of the SN Factory project will further our understanding of Dark Energy.

Long Term Visitors to top


Stelios Kazantzidis (University of Zurich) is visiting for the period January 5 - April 8, 2004. Andrey Kravtsov is his host.

Professor Martin Einhorn (University of Michigan) is visiting us for the period March 1 - June 30, 2004. His main area of research is elementary particle theory with focus on Higgs physics, gauge field theory and cosmology.

In the spring we will have brief visits from Alan Watson (Leeds) of the Auger Project, Ravi Sheth (Pittsburg), Eric Linder (LBL), David Hogg (NYU), Matias Zaldariagga ( ), Lexi Moustakas (STScI), Anthony Aguirre (IAS) and Ben Wandelt (UIUC). Please check our website for updates on their seminars/colloquia.

In addition our External Advisory Board will be visiting on April 8-9 for their annual review of our Institute. We hope most KICP fellows and students will be around to meet with them. Helen will send you email closer to the date.

"Santa Fe 2004 Cosmology Summer Workshop"
July 5 - 23, 2004

KICP will be supporting graduate student attendance at the Santa Fe workshop. The workshop will be held at St. John's College, a pleasant and prestigious campus situated in the hills east of downtown Santa Fe. Please contact conference organizer Salman Habib website for details.

Since they do not support travel we will in addition support travel for 2-3 graduate students to attend this meeting. Graduate students please send your requests to Monica Valluri by April 15th.

The Santa Fe topical workshop for 2004 will concentrate on recent developments in cosmology, especially those related to current and expected observational advances, including the cosmic microwave background (CMB), large-scale structure, and dark matter and energy/early universe. The first two weeks will be devoted largely to structure formation and the CMB, while the last week will focus on dark energy. The format will emphasize discussion with some formal pedagogical review and related talks as appropriate.

New in Education and Outreach to top


Cosmology Research @ Museums in 3D

Fly through the Large Scale Structure of the Universe or visit the VERITAS telescope without leaving Chicago.
Cosmus, an interdisciplinary team of graduate students, has been collaborating with SciTech Hands-On Science Museum and the Adler Planetarium & Astronomy Museum to create 3D electronic exhibits focused on KICP research. These virtual environments allow museum visitors explore exciting aspects of modern science from the actual structure of the universe (both observed by SDSS and simulated by A. Kravtsov) to the design of a gamma ray telescope. Center faculty have worked closely with the group and provided scientific background, ideas, and real data for these interactive exhibits.

The exhibits have been developed primarily for the "Geowall" which is an inexpensive stereo-projection system that consists of two LCD projectors, polarizing filters, polarized 3D glasses, a computer with two video cards, and a polarization preserving screen. The result is similar to a 3D movie, which museum visitors can actively navigate. A number the Cosmus teams creations are already on display at SciTech, and recently Josh Frieman used the SDSS data as part of the KICP/Adler The Adventure of Modern Cosmological class. The group is presenting a paper on their work at the IEEE VR 2004 meeting and will continue refining the exhibits next quarter. Please preview them at the "Projects" section of the Cosmus website. Also, if you are interested in viewing the large scale structure of the universe or the Veritas telescope in 3D, or the Geowall itself contact the Cosmus group leaders Randy Landsberg or Mark SubbaRao.

Aspen Center for Physics Summer Workshop 2004
June 28 - July 11, 2004

KICP is helping to organize Physics Education & Outreach workshop at the Aspen Center for Physics June 28 - July 11. This two week workshop will focus on communicating current science to the public and K-12 efforts. Both research physicists and educators are encouraged to attend.
