The KICP's education and outreach efforts take advantage of the urban setting of the University of Chicago, the public's fascination with astronomy & fundamental questions of the Universe, and the unique resources associated with forefront research (people, ideas, expertise). The Institute's programs are wide-ranging and diverse but the majority of our efforts and resources are focused on three key Signature Programs.

Signature Programs

Cosmology Courses:
Short courses for educators and scientists intended to help introduce modern research into classrooms and museums.

Museum Partnerships:
Genuine partnerships & collaborations with museums that help bring forefront science, particularly cosmology, to a large cross section of the public.

Space Explorers (Inner-City K-12 Enrichment Program):
Multifaceted, multi-year commitment to inner city, minority, precollege students that includes interactions with the KICP community, laboratory experiences, and residential institutes at Yerkes Observatory.

The Kavli Institute's education & outreach goals can be summed up as diversity, communication, and integration:

  • Diversity of the next generation of scientists and their skill sets
  • Communication of our science among scientists and to broader audiences
  • Integration of KICP research into formal and informal educational programs
