Picture: Cross-correlation in the high redshift sky
Website

Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to inform you that the workshop “Cross-correlation in the high redshift sky” will be held in London this coming June (18th-20th) on the University College London campus.

With the release of the Planck results and products, alongside current and forthcoming large-scale structure data, we believe it timely to organise this workshop. Our prime objective is to bring together experts in different cosmological probes to share knowledge and ideas on how best to combine multiple observables. We aim at covering the following subjects and more during the workshop:

- Correlations between CMB observables (anisotropies, lensing, SZ) and optical LSS surveys
- Correlations between LSS surveys observables: galaxy and galaxy lensing
- Correlations with LSS surveys in other frequencies: Radio astronomy
- Correlations between CMB, LSS and other fields: Extragalactic Gamma ray background, ...

The sessions will include both invited talks and talks contributed by attendees. Each morning will begin with a 1-hour lecture on some of the main aspects of cross-correlations pitched at a pedagogical level. This is a perfect opportunity for new graduate students to learn more about an exciting and growing field in cosmology.

More information about venue, registration and abstract submission can be found on the workshop website:

Picture: Astroparticle Physics: a joint IDM/TeVPA conference
Website

Dear Colleague,

We are delighted to announce ‘Astroparticle Physics – A Joint TeVPA/IDM Conference’ (http://indico.cern.ch/e/TeVPAIDM), a special event that will take place in Amsterdam from the 23 – 28 June 2014. This event brings together two major international conference series in Astroparticle Physics; Identification of Dark Matter (IDM) and TeV Particle Astrophysics (TeVPA).

We aim to provide a stage for the most recent advances in the booming field of Astroparticle Physics, bringing to Amsterdam - a city that has recently invested a lot into this research area through initiatives like GRAPPA and the D-ITP - leading members of the scientific communities that are contributing to its success. A list of confirmed plenary speakers and conveners of the parallel sessions can be found on the conference website.

We invite contributions in the following research areas: Cosmic Rays; Dark Matter in Cosmology; Direct Dark Matter Searches; Indirect Dark Matter Searches, High Energy Particle Physics; Neutrinos and High Energy Astrophysics. Registration and abstract submission will open on 1 February 2014.

The conference will be held at the Tuschinski Theatre, an extraordinary landmark located in the heart of Amsterdam, which was built in 1921 in a spectacular mix of Amsterdam School, Jugendstil, Art Nouveau and Art Deco. The main auditorium, which hosts many Dutch film premieres, is considered one of the most beautiful cinemas in the world. A special social event is planned at Het Scheepvaartmuseum. It will include a guided visit to the exhibition halls and a sumptuous dinner under the recently installed Atrium.

The conference is partially supported by the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP). To secure IUPAP sponsorship, the organisers have provided assurance that "Astroparticle Physics" will be conducted in accordance with IUPAP principles as stated in the IUPAP resolution passed by the General Assembly in 2008. Characterizing Planetary Systems Across the HR Diagram
July 28 - August 1, 2014 | Institute for Astronomy, University of Cambridge, England
Picture: Characterizing Planetary Systems Across the HR Diagram
Website

First Announcement

The University of Cambridge Institute of Astronomy will host a 5 day scientific meeting to further our understanding of the formation and evolution of planetary systems. The meeting will focus on the full lifetime of planetary systems, from pre- to post-main sequence host star stages, and the connections that can be made by viewing these evolutionary stages as parts of a whole. In this way, the program aims to provide an integrative approach rather than focusing on each stellar stage separately.

We will bring together participants from the growing diversity of planetary science disciplines: star-planet formation, solar system studies, exoplanets, debris disks, host star abundances and atmospheric pollution, stellar evolution, and planetary dynamics. The conference can accommodate up to 150 people.

The overall goal of the meeting is to generate discussion and increase scientific interactions among the diverse communities interested in the formation, architecture, and evolution of planetary systems. Two themes that represent the spirit of the meeting are:

The physical and chemical connections between evolved planetary systems, their main-sequence counterparts, and those forming in proto-planetary disks
The scientific potential for extracting planetary system frequency, structure, chemistry, and dynamics at different evolutionary phases and stellar populations.

Session Topics will include:

- Proto-planetary disk and planetary atmosphere chemistry
- Planetesimal and solid planet compositions
- Planet and debris populations
- Host star elemental abundances and pollution
- Planetary system and host star evolution

Transformational Science in the ALMA Era: Multi-Wavelength Studies of Galaxy Evolution
August 4 - 7, 2014 | Charlottesville, VA
Picture: Transformational Science in the ALMA Era: Multi-Wavelength Studies of Galaxy Evolution
Website

At this workshop we will explore four central themes in the field of galaxy evolution by bringing together current and future studies with ALMA and from across the electromagnetic spectrum from existing (e.g. VLA/GBT/IRAM/CARMA, HST, Spitzer/Herschel, Chandra/NuStar) as well as future facilities (e.g., JWST, MeerKAT/ASKAP/SKA, LSST, EUCLID, TMT/GMT/EELT, CCAT/LMT). The four themes will be: the mass assembly history of galaxies and formation and evolution of galactic structure, the evolution of the interstellar medium and star formation over cosmic time, the role of large scale structure and environment and the role of AGN in galaxy evolution. Within these broad themes we will identify two to three critical questions in each area that will most benefit from the new data from these facilities. The participants will be invited to specifically address these questions. Our hope is to foster discussion and debate and an active exchange of ideas with the goal of energizing the participants to address the outstanding questions in these areas using multi-wavelength data from all of these facilities.

SLAC Summery Institute: Shining Light on Dark Matter
August 4 - 15, 2014 | SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, Menlo Park, California
Picture: SLAC Summery Institute: Shining Light on Dark Matter
Website

The 2014 SLAC Summer Institute will focus on the quest to identify Dark Matter. Observations indicate that 85% of the matter in the universe is non-luminous and point towards the existence of cold dark matter particles. However, all evidence so far is based on dark matter's gravitational interactions and its particle identity remains a deep mystery. The development of a variety of probes to illuminate the nature of Dark Matter has made this one of the most vibrant frontiers today. Morning lectures will cover all aspects of dark matter, from observational evidence for its existence, to its role in cosmic evolution and structure, to direct, indirect and collider searches. In the afternoons, topical conference talks will alternate with discussion sessions, student projects, tours, and social events.
